Ischia is the largest island in the Gulf of Naples with a territory of over 35 square kilometres. The island is rich in natural resources including an abundance of thermal springs, lush greenery, beaches and crystal-clear waters.
Ischia was the first western Greek colony and subsequently subject to various dominions, however the island has always maintained its prevailing farming traditions, especially focusing on agriculture and wine-making.
The island is most popular for its thermal springs; the Romans, over 20 centuries ago, discovered the healing properties of the thermal springs and began bathing in the waters for both beauty and healing purposes. Since the nineteenth century, Ischia has become one of Europe’s most visited spa centres, with a high concentration of thermal springs situated around Casamicciola and Lacco Ameno.
Along with its rich resources in thermal springs present in the island’s numerous spas, visitors are also attracted to Ischia for its spectacular beaches and Mediterranean sea, spending days whiling away in the sunshine and soaking in the clean waters. Many thermal spa gardens on the island have cleverly combined the sea with thermal springs, creating gardens of warm thermal pools situated by the beach overlooking the spectacular scenery of the island.
